My avocation is photography. It is both a creative and spiritual outlet which has brought me a great deal of satisfaction over the years. Most of my photography involves nature. I am drawn to the earth and photography has taught me to see it in a new way. Nature is the glory of the Rocky Mountains or the miracle of a nesting bird, it is also the intricate patterns and play of light on sand or rock. Photography has taken me places and forced me to see more than I would as a passing tourist. It has also made me keenly aware of how much we have to lose if we do not take care of what is left. The wetlands filled in and replaced by concrete can never return.
The wonder of the photographic process is the way it takes me away from myself and the before and after. While I am taking pictures or when I am working on an image in the computer I am in the “now”. It is not really a thinking process, it is more like being lead down a path and trusting that the end of that path will provide a sense of harmony or wonder.
Of course, sometimes it leads to the delete button. Oh well.
